Life is far from equilibrium, fueled by constant energy dissipation, and is regulated via feedback mechanism. Active molecular systems use chemicals as fuels to run their structures in a dissipative steady-state by consuming the fuel. Once the energy is spent, the system relaxes to the ground state. This results in transient steady states with unusual dynamics, adaptiveness and autonomous system lifetimes. Our objective is to characterize non-equilibrium material systems across the time and length scales. To accomplish this task, an atomic force microscope (AFM), a versatile and powerful microscopy technology, is used.
